Slip stitch (slip st)
CROCHET SQUARESChain 6; join with a slip st to form a ring.
Round 1: Ch 1, * sc in ring, ch 1; repeat from * 3 times, join with slip st to first sc—4 sc; 4 ch-1 spaces.
Round 2: Slip st in first ch-1 space; ch 3 (counts as first dc), work 3 dc in same ch-1 space as slip st, * ch 4 (corner space), work 4 dc in next ch-1 space; repeat from * 2 times, end ch 4 (corner space), join with a slip st in third ch of beginning ch-3.
Round 3: Ch 5 (counts as dc, ch 2), skip 2 dc, dc in next dc (last dc of first dc-4 group), * ch 2, work [dc, ch 4, dc] in ch-4 corner space, ch 2 +, dc in first dc of  next dc-4 group, ch 2, skip 2 dc, dc in fourth dc of dc-4 group; repeat from * around, end last repeat at +, join with a slip st in third ch of beginning ch-5.
Round 4: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in same st as joining, * skip ch-2, work 2 dc in next dc, 2 dc in next ch-2 space, dc in next dc, work [3dc, ch 4, 3 dc] in ch-4 corner space, dc in next dc, work 2 dc in ch-2 space +, 2 dc in next dc; repeat from * around, end last repeat at +, join with a slip st in third ch of beginning ch-3.

Picot EdgingUsing hook, join yarn at any seam between 2 Squares.
Ch 1, working into ch-spaces and sts as you come, *work 3 sc along edge of Square, ch 3 (picot), beginning in next st or ch-space, repeat from * around, join with a slip st to first sc.
NOTE
  • Back is worked from lower edge to shoulders.
  • Fronts are worked from side to side (see schematic).
  • Crochet Squares are sewn to edges after assembling Jacket; they will ruffle slightly when eased to fit. Ruffling may be increased or decreased by working Squares with a larger or smaller hook.

  • K to RC=028 (all sizes). Reset RC = 000.
Shape Armholes 
  • BO 5 (6, 7, 8, 9, 10) sts beg next 2 R: 72 (78, 86, 92, 100, 106) sts rem.
  • Dec 1 st ea side every row 4 (5, 6, 7, 10, 12) times: 64 (68, 74, 78, 80, 82) sts rem.  
  • Dec 1 st each side EOR 2 (2, 3, 3, 3, 3) times—60 (64, 68, 72, 74, 76) sts rem. 
  • K to RC=048 (050, 54, 54, 56, 60).
Shape Shoulders 
  • BO 7 (8, 8, 9, 9, 10) sts beg next 2 R. 
  • BO 6 (7, 8, 9, 9, 9) sts beg next 2 R—34 (34, 36, 36, 38, 38) sts rem for neck. 
  • BO rem sts.
LEFT FRONT
Note: Piece is worked from side-to-side, with all shaping done on right-hand side only.
  • Using KP#2 and chain st CO Method, CO 54 (56, 58, 58, 60, 62) sts. COR. RC=000.
  • K to RC=104. Mark RHS for beg of shoulder.
  • K to RC = 120 (122, 124, 126, 126, 130). 
Shape Armhole
  • COR. BO 24 (25, 25, 24, 21, 22) sts—30 (31, 33, 34, 39, 40) sts rem. 
  • Dec 1 st on right side every row 8 (9, 11, 12, 17, 18) times—22 sts rem. 
  • K 6 (8, 9, 11, 12, 14) R. RC=135 (140, 145, 150, 158, 163).

RIGHT FRONT
Work as for left Front, reversing all shaping.
SLEEVES
  • Using KP#2 and chain stitch CO Method, CO 54 sts. COR. RC=000.
  • K to RC=024.
  • Beg this row, inc 1 st ea side every 24 (12, 8, 8, 6, 4) R, 2 (4, 7, 7, 9, 11) times—58 (62, 68, 68, 72, 76) sts. 
  • K to RC=074.
Shape Cap 
  • BO 5 (6, 7, 8, 9, 10) sts beg next 2 R—48 (50, 54, 52, 54, 56) sts rem.
  • Dec 1 st ea side every row 4 (6, 8, 8, 10, 12) times—40 (38, 38, 36, 34, 32) sts rem. 
  • Dec 1 st each side EOR 10 (9, 9, 8, 7, 6) times—20 sts rem. 
  • BO 3 sts beg next 2 rows, then 4 sts beg next 2 rows. RC=104—6 sts rem.               
  • BO rem sts loosely.
FINISHING
Assembly 
Note: Assembly diagram is for reference only when assembling pieces; it is not shown to scale, nor does it show the number of Squares to be used (see below).
  • Sew shoulder seams. 
  • Set in sleeves; sew side and sleeve seams.
Join Crocheted Squares
  • Lower Front edge; join 2 strips of 4 (4, 4, 5, 5, 5) Squares ea.  
  • Side Fronts and lower Back edge; join 1 strip of 11 (11, 12, 13, 13, 14) Squares.
  • Center Fronts and Back neck edge: join 1 strip of 8 Squares. 
  • Sleeves; join 2 strips of 2 Squares ea.
  • Pin strips of squares to jacket, easing to fit; add or subtract Squares as needed to achieve the amount of fullness you want along the edges.  
  • Join strips where they meet as shown on diagram.
  • With WS facing, using hook and sc, join squares to jacket.
  • Work 1 row Picot edging around all edges.
Using yarn needle, weave in ends.
